1980 – late 80ies

Automation Group San Diego, Architecture, Engieneering, Construction & Facilities Management Newsletter (AEC & FM) covering the new, evoling applications like: GIS, CAD, CAM, CIM, DDP,  GIS, …. See Alpha and a cover, more to be added a.s.a.p. The Newsletter Series founding editor Ed Forrest, later in Europe also Heiner Benking covered over years new technology developments from hardware, software, industries to applications, with the key industry movers and shakers and users and vendors as subscribers. I will add more samples later, here a copy of the FM-Newsletter with German Cover and an ALPHA-listing.

1981

Automated Production Drafting and Design: Autotrol Technologies founded 1964, 5 years before Intergraph (1969) was the leading CADD vendor in the 70ies/early 80ies.

DRUPA 1981, Text and Graphics Merge, Auto-trol, Apollo Domain, IBM and Volt Phototypesetting  Using an Apollo – Domain Microsystem – years before SUN Microsystems was an asset for numbercrunching & visualization.

Out of the DRUPA presenation not only a co-operation with Arthur D’Little, Advanced Systems, IBM, Autotrol, .. VAI  Video Aided Instructions Tutorials for TELEMATICS, Computer-Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) “evolved” – and as this was on the “LEADING EDGE” of advanced technologies and applications, this article in 1983 was a “highlight”:  especially as we know had the computing power and visualistion capabiulities to tackle cross-scale and cross-issues subjects:

1993:

Immersive Infographics across scales (Computer Graphics of an exponate model from 1990 (Rubiks’s Cube of Ecology)

See also the last 4 colour figures: “Creative Catalytic Imagery and Metaphor” as part of the presenation, poster and workshops:  Visual Access Strategies for Multi-Dimensional Objects and Issues - A new World View, based on the Hyperlink ECO-CUBE, for better understanding and communication”.   See there: our “View of Life is too Flat” presenting a thinkspace as a “blackbox” as a “pointer to possibilities” and as a “white-box” (FAW Newsletter and FAW Report TR-93019)

Heiner Benking (1993), Visual Access Strategies for Multi-Dimensional Objects and Issues / "Our View of Life is too Flat", WFSF, Turku, 1993 see Knowledge Spiral &  Helsingin Sannomat, and the “Cognitive Panorama  (9D)  and Cognitive Spaces (extensional/immersive/augmented). For checking what is meant by whitebox/blackbox I recommend this Systems Encyclopedia and this link.

Please see also the FAW Newsletter Sonderausgabe / b/w and  the special  ColourVersion.  I wonder why so little progress made from 1993 to the time we published New Horizons and Orientation Thanks to a New Mental Architecture - ARCHITEKTUR FÜR DENKRÄUME – Hochschule für Gestaltung 1996 in Ulm, or later in HAGIA CHORA – To see with other EyesMit anderen Augen sehen. In the early 90ies IIID vision plus and Creativity and Cognition (C&C) came up, all was there and little progress has been made the last 20 years, conceptually !!technologically we crashed all gates and forcasts ! – So what can we learn form this in 2012? – Maybe SIGs plus GIGs? – or the Robust Paths can provide some answers, specially as around ISY – ESSIS in Pasadena 1992, all these new internet technologies, meta-data, avatars, virtual reality, visualization,… were emerging.

Postscript August 2012:

I was recently quite disturbed. Some young activist at a very reknown foundation presented what they considered to be: INFOGRAFIK or INFOGRAPHICS. I spoke later from the floor… Some might not have gotten the essence of the typical invited contributions by the audience, having to cover in my case in 2 minutes of what I referred to of maybe 25+ years “inforgraphics” and summing up what presdenters where not getting at in hours….

I checked WIKIPEDIA in English and German and was lost. Did the lineage in WIKIPEDIA really presented what was going on in the 7oies and 80ies !?

really present what was intended and meant by INFOGRAPHICs ?

It somehow ends with an enlighted statistician, sculputer, visualizer, who worked on quantitative data in 1983 Edward R. Tufte (1983). The Visual Display of Quantitative Information. Edition, Cheshire, CT: Graphics Press and in 1990: Edward R. Tufte Envisioning Information. Cheshire, CT: Graphics Press.

Let us remember for a moment that Kim H. Veltman wrote the introduction to ENVISIONING GRAPHICS of Tufte !  Kim at that time with the McLuhan in the Coachhouse in Toronto.  Check his work on Perspective, the relation to Gombricht, Warburg, …. Kim opened in 1970ies and 80ies the doors to cultural, perspective, multi-dimensional, poly-historical, … perspectives.  See later Maastricht McLuhan Institute, now (VMMI)  and SUMS. I recommend WIKIPEDIA Spectasia

As you can see, I got tired of all these word-walls, so working on “INFOGRAPHICS – INFOGRAPHIQUE – INFOGRAFIK” ends up in different silos, with intrnasparent mindsets and contextrs, all these searchers and scholars follow their “clan” or “disciplined isolation!” between the sectors, turfs, and fields, jargons, or “disciplines”…. So after a second which changed my life on August 28, 1987, I left the subject area of “Infographique” even when revisiting info-management in UN Harmonization projects…. to look into the scales, subjects, scales, languages,… involved. Maybe check “clanthink and groupthink”  check: http://quergeist.net/Warfield/THINKS.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spreadthink   http://bulldozer00.com/2009/07/14/clanthink-groupthink-spreadthink/   and “Ignorance or Compassion?”
